Summer Ready in Sun Yellow

Summer is not officially here but that has not stopped this fashion blogger from getting  a head start. I look forward to Summer for a number of reasons- longer days, and warmer weather definitely topping the list. I also love selecting from the brightest pieces in my wardrobe and pairing them with equally bold pieces. (Madeline similarities are entirely coincidental.)

Bold colors, like this super cute yellow dress that I found at Forever 21 recently for a solid price point of $8 typically end up being my favorite foundations for a memorable fashion moment. Whether paired with a printed accessory or an equally bold statement bag, the possibilities of fabulousness are endless! Even if standing out in a crowd is not your cup of tea, you can still rock a yellow ensemble and pair it with more neutral accents i.e nude shoes and gold accessories.

June 1st my best friend challenged me to take the month long Disney Style Challenge. And while I would love to spend every single day at Disneyland and capitalize on all the magical photo opps that typically present themselves at the happiest place on earth, it is not possible despite the luxury of being an annual pass holder. Fortunately for me, nestled away just a few cities over is Old Town Temecula, a part of town that looks like it’s the more Western sister of Main Street USA. Alas, I found several perfect backdrops to compliment my tribute to Donald Duck- which happens to be the challenge for June 9th. I love outfits with a theme and more specifically outfits with a Disney theme!

Summer Trend Alert: Nautical

yellow wall (a)

Dress: Owl Fish Wristlet: Coach X Disney Sunnies: Prada

So while we still technically have a few days left of Spring, I personally can’t wait for Summer to officially grace us with it’s presence. Perhaps because we are still on the heels of Memorial Day, and perhaps because I love anything that matches my favorite Mickey ears wristlet, I have a thing for style with nodes of red, white and blue. Alas, one of my favorite Summer trends I’m looking forward to the most is that of nautical inspiration.

Easily confused with Americana, typically nautical exudes beachy vibes. Alas, in addition to a very patriotic color scheme, the perfect nautical ensemble is accented with gold. For me, I typically opt for gold accessories. Some more traditional nautical pieces are often affiliated with 4th of July high wasted swim wear as seen on beach babes of the 60’s and 70’s and include gold accents in the form of buttons.

This trend is so easy to accomplish and can be achieved with some of the most basic closet staples including denim jeans and a white t-shirt. Last week I started my Summer Style preview and rocked this look accented with a red scarf. Felt a little scouttish but I was happy with how the look came together.

What Summer trend are you dear readers looking forward to most?

Still Not Over the Overall Game

HM_Overalls (1 of 1)

Overalls: H&M Shoes: French Connection Necklace: Charlotte Russe Blouse: Equipment Sunglasses: Ray Bans Hat: Saks

If I had to say there was one piece of clothing that has been a staple in my wardrobe since the beginning, I’d have to say I’ve been pretty committed to the overall game since day 1. From the toddler days and Oshkosh Begosh (totally misspelled that, please don’t judge.) To the good ol’ days when Old Navy ruled my fashion game, overalls have been my go to ensemble for casual days.

My styling skills however, just like the coffee I drink as an adult compared to the cup o’ diabetes I would consume as an 8th grader have only gotten stronger. At least I would like to think. I recall fondly pairing my overalls in high school with an Abercrombie or Hollister top. Add that to a pair of cargo pants, and some white out on your back pack proclaiming your love for a boy band or Blink 182 and bam! You have the guide to so cal style for a high schooler circa 2000. Although my love for the Backstreet Boys remains the same, my styling skills and investment into labels and pieces have dramatically changed. Thank God. Not to say I still don’t have a special place in my heart for Hollister, I do. But I’ve learned it’s so much more fun to play with pieces regardless of the label on the tag. While yes, I do love my labels, it’s not so much the prestige that attracts me but rather the quality. I’ve always been horrible at math but whenever investing in a high quality piece of clothing or accessory I like to consider cost per wear. I’ve found if it’s something I’m going to get endless amounts of wear out of, the more sound the investment. Once I found a $1500 Akris Punto coat for only $300. That has been a go to coat for the past 3 years! One of my equally stylish friends once pointed out that that coat was at a point of being literally less than a dollar a day! And I plan on making it pennies!

Another factor I like to take into consideration is timeless appeal. Like, will this piece stand the test of time in my closet? I’ve come to find that the more simple a piece, the more likely it will last countless seasons in my closet without blatantly jeopardizing the dreaded title of being an “Outfit Repeater.” (Insert cringe here.) When it comes to overalls, I can literally foresee them lasting forever in my closet. Because even if the time comes when I can no longer justify them as a ready to wear, blog worthy statement piece. they’ll always be my go to chores around the house, let’s paint some walls or plant a garden attire. Which works perfect because I’ve taken on the hobby of gardening as well. Pictures and blog to come soon to recap that adventure!

Style Fashion Week Fall 2015

So another Style Fashion Week has come and gone and despite a new career opportunity with weeks of training consuming my time, I was able to make it to the season’s closing evening. And while I was sad that I missed the dramatic sequined gowns by Sue Wong, and the Style Me Pink event one of my good friends has helped planned for almost a year, I was eternally grateful for the opportunity to attend at least one event.

It isn’t an LA Fashion show if there are not infinite amount of swimsuits sashaying down the catwalk. And while something as simple and small as a bathing suit might not strike one as being a fashion choice that emits creative inspiration, I personally enjoy seeing the variety of silhouettes. Traditionally when you think of swimsuits you think of two choices: the one piece and the two piece. But there are sooo many more options. You’ve got string options, sleeve options and infinite amount of pattern and embellishment options. My favorite and a label that I’ve seen previously is A’Qua Swim. It’s as though the forces have aligned with Mattel and Bob Mackie and inspired the label’s designer Adrienne Fuqua to create fabulous pieces traditionally believed to only exist in the world of Barbie.

Then theres the Marco Marco show. Legendary amongst the LA fashion crowds and best known for his theatrical presentation, Marco Marco was an experience that is almost a right of passage. From fluorescent skin tight ensembles covered in fringe and crystals modeled by some of the most notorious drag queens, and social media stars it was surely the event of the season. The show which was slated to be “part 2” of his show that debuted during New York Fashion Week brought an energy and excitement that even attracted the likes of Carmen Electra. As someone who has been attending LA Fashion Week (Style Fashion Week as some refer to it) for a few years now, the excitement that is now affiliated with it and the notoriety of some of the labels gracing the lineup, I’m excited to see what else is next! Before it seemed like it was solely a resource FIDM’s finest could utilize as a resource to launch their career and introduce themselves to local So Cal boutiques. Now, it seems as though it is launching the careers of some of fashion’s elite and capturing the attention of icon’s such as Beyonce. To see that some of our hometown hero’s are now sharing their talent with international and even New York audiences is a humbling concept. While yes, it’s given us loyal LA attendees bragging rights in the form of “I saw them first!” it is exciting to see that just in any industry passion and commitment to success combined with a dash of theatrics makes for the perfect recipe of success. Literally cannot wait to see what next season brings as each time it seems to get bigger and better.

Floral Fun At The Happiest Place On Earth

floralromper3 (1 of 1)

Romper: Saks Private Label 5/48 Hat: Saks Bag: Marc Jacobs Sandals: Elizabeth and James Sunnies: Prada

First and foremost, disclaimer if you plan on visiting Disneyland in the coming weeks. SAVE YOUR MONEY! Almost everything is closed for refurbishment right now. Critter Country is closed. Peter Pan, The Matterhorn and a slew of other park favorites are CLOSED! Which wouldn’t be an issue except with half the park closed that means attendees now have limited options for entertainment thus everyone is now waiting in line for Pirates. Seriously, you know the traffic situation is out of control when that line is longer than 15 minutes. Yesterday, it was a 40 minute wait. However, if you must get your Disney fix, California Adventure is a great option. Not nearly as crowded and the Little Mermaid is still only a 5 minute wait.

Ok, now moving on. So it’s officially almost Spring! Although let’s be honest it’s felt that way in good ol’ So Cal for at least a month now and I couldn’t be more thrilled. There are so many great trends this season, and floral prints and jumpsuits are among my favorite. So imagine my delight when I came across this uber cute floral jumpsuit! I had contemplated investing in an all denim romper but alas it was too long and I took that as a sign it was perhaps wiser to invest in the more feminine choice. And that after all is what Spring is all about! Floral patterns, soft color palettes, and flowy fabrics! Of course you can add a little edge by infusing darker shades like I did here with my black large brimmed hat, but alas it was a perfect, fashionable choice to protect my face on a bright sunny zippity dooo da day. And it works perfect for those rogue cloudy blustery days too. I like to think this piece will be versatile even as I transition out of Summer and into Fall, as it can be paired then with some black wedged ankle booties and a crimson shade of lipstick. As I’ve said before, you know you’ve invested in a good piece when the styling options are not only endless, but seasonless as well.

The Cherry Blossoms in bloom at Disneyland were breathtaking. I couldn’t see the critters of Critter Country but these pretty pink blooms were a nice and refreshing substitution.

All You Need Is Love, A Sense of Adventure and An Appreciation For 36 Foot Pieces of Art

My recent trip to Texas was significantly better than my first one. This fact is entirely due to the fact I had the opportunity to meet my brand new niece, who for the record is the most beautiful baby to grace this planet. Ok, so my opinion might be slightly biased but facts are facts and the fact is, she’s perfect.

Alas, in addition to gaining about 20 pounds (no thanks to Whataburger which has nothing on In N Out, BBQ and Blue Bell Ice Cream shakes) I gained some intel on some pretty interesting places to visit when in Houston. The last time I was in Texas, the only place i visited was the inside of my hotel room, and my time was spent entirely watching a Harry Potter marathon on ABC Family. In all fairness it was disgustingly hot and humid outside. I can’t enjoy a place that causes my hair to frizz. Fortunately this time around it was just cold. Not freezing, but cold enough to make me appreciate our 80 degree winters in So. Cal.

While much of my time was spent bonding with my new favorite person, and catching up with my long lost furry four legged friend Bella (whom I lovingly refer to as Fluff) I made a commitment to see at least one interesting place before I left. So our last night in town, I did what any adventure seeking tourist would do and googled interesting things to do while in Houston. Of course the space thing and Whataburger popped up, but so did the work gallery of sculptor David Adickes. 36 foot tall statues of the most infamous band in the world? Now that’s a place I wanted to see! Not only was it free, but it was on the way to the airport. Perfect! While other visitor recaps included 18 foot busts of Presidents, my visit only included the Beatles and two headless president busts. Which was fine. Ringo Starr is far more impressive to me than the Ronald Reagan anyhow.

When I arrived I was beyond thrilled to find the giant statues of the fab 4 standing in what appeared to be an abandoned dirt lot. While I was bummed I only brought my 50 mm lens, and my telephoto lens therefore preventing me from capturing the brilliance of this art work at an acceptable angle and decent light, I did the best I could with what I had. It’s my understanding that the availability of work featured at the lot changes as pieces are obviously sent to more permanent locations. I checked affiliated hash tags on various social media sights to confirm that work had been sighted recently. It’s visiting places such as this, where someone has imagined and created aw inspiring works of art that can forever be shared with the world that inspire my sense of adventure. So, while I didn’t get an opportunity to visit the space center, or the park where alligators roam free, I did get to look into the statuesque faces of 4 rock legends, ironically in the form of rock. The world is full of so many wonderful things, all ya have to do is look for them.

*On a fashionable note, apparently it’s a dead giveaway to Texans you’re from California if you wear a large brimmed hat. I thought wearing a hat and my Chloe boots was my way of fitting in (nobody ever said your hat had to be a cowboy hat!) One woman stopped me to inform me she was in love with my favorite large brimmed black hat. “I don’t’ have a hat like that but I know they have those in New York and California” she explained. Well what’d ya know! I am from California! I told her next time I visited I’d bring an extra one in the event I run into her again. After all, it’s one thing to share a work of art with the world, but it’s also pretty cool to share a fashion statement.

My Thankful List

Top: Vince Button Up: Rails Beanie: Saks Grey Label Boyfriend Jeans: Elizabeth and James Shoes: Valentino

Thanksgiving is perhaps one of the most underestimated holidays. A day to be thankful for all of our blessings and to spend with loved ones, why we don’t spend 5 months leading up to this holiday is beyond me. And the 10 pounds gained and countless food comas are just an added bonus. This year I am thankful for the following:

1. High heels. Seriously a short girls solution to surviving in a world made for tall people. Because of heels I can sometimes reach the floor when I sit in a super high chair.

2. My family. I never get to say it but their endless love and support makes me never settle for anything less than what I’ve always dreamed of. I’m not quite sure exactly what that is just yet but I know I’m on the right path to figure it out.

3. Harry Potter, just because he was the boy who lived. In all seriousness the story of Harry Potter has gotten me through life. I had to keep going just because Harry did and I had to know what happened in the end. Turns out the ending wasn’t the ending after all so I still have an excuse to keep going!

4. HCG. For making me skinny when I indulge in too many holiday drinks. And chocolate. And Chipotle. I love Chipotle, which brings me to 5…

5. Chipotle. Thank you for making believe eating out can be healthy. Even with sour cream.

6. Barbie, Hello Kitty and Lisa Frank. For making the world fabulous colorful and whimsical. And pink.

7. Law and Order: SVU. Thank you for helping me understand the law and making me sound intelligent when talking legal matters.

8. Disneyland. No need to elaborate there.

9. My best friends. Even though I don’t get to see you guys as much as I would like, I’m thankful for all our memories, past, present, and soon to come.

And last but not least for my boo. I love you more than anything….even more than Chipotle. For making me laugh when I want to cry and for pushing me to be a better person each and every day. And also for accepting the fact that I love Jax Teller and will probably have a mental break down when Sons of Anarchy ends. And for loving me despite the fact I become overly emotional whenever I watch Glee.

Bracing For Winter in My Barbie Sweater

Top: Forever 21 Pants: Saks Fifth Avenue Red Label Shoes: Valentino

Top: Forever 21 Pants: Saks Fifth Avenue Red Label Shoes: Valentino Sunnies: Dolce and Gabbana

I didn’t think it would ever happen but sweater weather finally arrived today! And in typical cliche form I couldn’t help but talk about it with nearly everyone I came into contact with today. Even the guy at Verizon, who enlightened me to the fact he spent $200 on his seasonal sweaters yesterday. I couldn’t help but share with him my technique for prepping my closet for a new season is to think about that season after it ends. Scratching your head thinking, what in the world is she talking about? Basically, my secret for being seasonally appropriate is to invest in seasonal pieces in the after sale. I got my swimsuits in January when stores were trying to move through their previous seasons to make way for new collections. Similarly, I invested in my sweaters a few months ago when the temperatures were still triple digit.

Ok, truthfully I would have looked for any excuse to buy this totes adorbs Barbie by Forever 21 sweater. But I knew it would be perfect for a cold day and wouldn’t ya know, I was right. It is just enough for temperatures that drop to about 60 degrees, aka the time of year when So Cal residents fear of dying of hypothermia. Ok, maybe that’s just me, but in truth anything less than 75 degrees is only acceptable temperatures when I have cute sweaters such as this to endure it.

When You Have to Ask Yourself: What Would Suri Cruise Do?

Dress: Free People Shoes: Chloe Necklace: Saks Sunnies: Dolce and Gabbana Hat: H&M

Dress: Free People Shoes: Chloe Necklace: Saks Sunnies: Dolce and Gabbana Hat: H&M

When your best friend texts you and says the evenings plans involve a cute dress, you can either (a) head to the mall and invest in a new ensemble or (b) think to yourself what would Suri Cruise do? Ok, I guess Suri would opt obviously for choice  (a) but fortunately for me I have a closet full of cute girly dresses that are totally suitable for a “cute dress” occasion. Truthfully, I’ve finally run out of room in my closet so I need to start limiting my mall trips to really important occasions.

The best part of cute dresses is you, the wearer are completely in control of how cute you want to make it. I asked my BFF on a scale of cute to glam how was I to style my dress? Her response? LOL! That response alone told me to save my ruffly Zac Posen for Target dress for another night (an oldie but a goodie when it comes to my favorite dresses that I own.) When in doubt I suppose it’s best to go with a signature style. Pink, lace, girly and two of my favorite labels later I had an outfit that was totes appropriate for the occasion. Simple yet girly. Pink, and perfect! While I hate being an outfit repeater, I love an opportunity to re-work an old fav. And in this case I simply incorporated some of my faces to make an epic outfit!

Big Hair Don’t Care: My Halloween As Marge Simpson

Dress: Nasty Gal Shoes: Melissa Necklace: Charming Charlie

Dress: Nasty Gal Shoes: Melissa Necklace: Charming Charlie

Happy Halloween dear readers! Halloween is my favorite time of year. It’s the Christmas for us creative people who take delight in sharing our creativity with the world. And this year I was determined to take Halloween to Lauren Conrad levels of creativity. I plan for Halloween like some people plan weddings. I try and start thinking of ways to up my previous year typically in June. However this year my inspiration came when MAC released their Marge Simpson collection. Why I never really looked at the world’s most notorious house wife for inspiration before is beyond me. And it worked out because my boyfriend got to dress up as one of his favorite cartoon characters (South Park and Family Guy didn’t even come close to making the cut. No way could I make Stewie cute.)

Becoming inspired is only half the battle though! An idea is only such until you start looking for ways to bring your inspiration to life. How I ever made it through Halloween or any festive event before Pinterest is beyond me. The makeup idea came from Pinterest (construction paper to add drama to falsies, who’d of thought?!) Nasty Gal, coincidentally just happened to be having a sale on one of their signature dresses in the perfect shade of green. And even better it was sparkly! The universe was practically begging me to be Marge! The only thing that was pure my imagination was Marge’s signature blue beehive hair do. I searched through countless wigs. I even considered going with a young Marge vibe which would mean I would have to settle for long flowy blueberry shade of blue locks. But every wig I found reminded me too much of Katy Perry, which is fine for Katy Perry things but this was serious and settling was not an option. Then I found it! The official wig that went with the Marge Simpson costume. It wasn’t dramatic enough and not worth the $80 the costume store wanted to charge for it. Ugh, if you want something done right ya just gotta do it yourself! Right across the aisle way from the Marge costume, strategically placed were a pair of fuzzy leg warmers for a Dr. Seus inspired costume. If anyone understood the cartoony drama I was looking for it totally would be Dr. Seus! Although looking back now I probably could have just gone to Joannes and picked up some blue fuzzy fabric. Alas, I finally found what I was looking for.

I took the leg warmers home and a discussion about how high was too high and some magic with some thread, a glue gun and plastic bags later my perfect Marge Simpson wig was made. I sewed the top of one of the leg warmers together. I took some fabric off of the second leg warmer and attached an elastic head band to it. Next I glued the elastic band to my enclosed leg warmer and stuffed the center with plastic shopping bags. Several things were tried to keep it up but the bags seemed to work best. If the stuffing was too heavy it caused the wig to collapse. I have never been so proud of a creation in my life! I was pretty impressed with my work until we went to a Halloween Party and someone showed up in a homemade Bat Mobile. The people in our neighborhood get how important this holiday is. From my Marge masterpiece, to the Bat Mobile, to our neighbors amazing set up I’d say we’ve got this Holiday covered!
