LA Style Week Officially A Hit For Us Little Fashion Bloggers!

Oh and also the designers who put a TON of hard work putting together memorable shows.

Ok, so LA Fashion week is yet to be held at the same level as New York, Paris or Milan. We are not about our name brands, but rather about our own names. Los Angelinos, while I’m sure are just as bad at being label whores as some of New York’s most elite (I’ll be first to put my name on that list) take more pride in promoting our individual style as opposed to a massive fashion house.

So first things first. This was my first official “LA Fashion Week” runway show. Yes, earlier in the year I attended Project Ethos which is a great event affiliated with Fashion Week however they are more an after party with great participants. Still a lot of fun, just less official. Tonight, I ventured out to LA Live (which if you ever decide to do this, please carry cash with you so you can park for half the price across the street rather than $25 at the venue.) Alas, I arrived and checked in at the media table.

What I love about the setup is the moment you walk through you’re treated like a VIP and given the option to walk the red carpet. Which naturally I did. Drinks are complimentary and there is an overabundance of local vendors promoting their collections. Some of which I’ll highlight in future blog posts to come.

The fun really began when the tents for the runway shows opened, and the models began strutting down the runway. Because of traffic (again) I missed the first two shows. Prohibition on flash photography prohibited me from taking decent pictures of the first show I attended, XCVI.

Fortunately, for me a sweet fellow fashionista, or fashionisto I suppose, saw me struggling to use my overly efficient camera and offered to give me some tips prior to the next show. Which was in my opinion the best show of the evening.

The show that closed tonight’s event was “Day by Day” an LA based collection of So. Cal loungewear. All the collections I saw today were the epitome of So. Cal chic. What better way to go about your day to day routines than in some comfy loungewear? Lord knows when doing extensive traveling or just having a relaxing “me” day I love a good track suit complete with matching jacket and bottoms. And let me tell you from experience this combo is perfect for long hour flights. It’s like the fashion gods said “here is the answer to your need of cute and cozy travel wear.” More of a cute tee gal? “Day by Day” has a piece for you too! This collection already has an extensive celebrity following including Alessandra Ambrosio and Kourtney Kardashian.

And speaking of the Kardashians, the Jenner girls and Scott Disick made an appearance at the show as well! I was fortunate to get a photo opp with Kylie Jenner after the show, and let me tell you the girl is gorgeous. Both of the girls seemed very reserved, not seeking attention by any means but rather just showing up to support something they love, LA FASHION!

Overall, my experience at this show was nothing short of fabulous. I got to meet some incredible talent, some fun new people and a rising fashion icon. Now I can’t wait till “Rock That Fashion” on Friday!

LA Fashion Week: Project Ethos Recap

LA Fashion Week: Project Ethos Recap

So unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to see all the shows due to being stuck in notoriously horrible LA traffic. But the best shows were really saved for last!

Model Sarah Stage featured in Michael Costello’s collection. Perhaps inspired by the Angelina Jolie leg?

By far my favorite presentation was Project Runway alum Michael Costello. After watching several interesting shows, every piece that sashayed down the runway literally took my breath away. From the draping, to the dramatic cuts, Costello nailed it! What I loved most about the collection was he designed pieces as an art form. Costello not only brought fabulous designs but a celebrity guest model as well. Lily Ghalichi of reality TV show “Shahs of Sunset” concluded Costello’s show in a stunning lime green and black lace piece.

One of the things to keep in mind about LA Fashion week, is it is not neccessarily a prediction of a season months to come, but rather a celebration of individual spirit, attitude and style. I had to remind myself of this when Tumbler and Tipsy by Michael Kuluva made his presentation. While initially, the collection reminded me of Betsey Johnson when she started embracing grunge, I silenced my inner Joan Rivers and really started to focus on the glam behind the grunge. Some of my favorite pieces of course were the ones accented in metallics or the gowns covered in sequins. As a self proclaimed lover of all things that sparkle, I really did find love in a hopeless place.

House of Pink Lemonade, debuted a collection that still has me contemplating what I thought of it. I did not love it, nor did I hate it. While many in the audience expressed rather puzzled expressions while the models very slowly walked the runway, as a photographer trying to capture the movement, I loved this unique aspect of the show. The pieces were VERY hit and miss. I loved the suits in bright colors and embellished with trim or buttons, everything else was just OK.

The highlight of the evening though, for those of us that stayed for the after party and mingle amongst the beautiful pieces of art was definitely the surprise show by men’s underwear designer, Andrew Christian. Naturally, when you have mostly naked, very attractive and very ahem, built men walking down a runway you are going to get a lot of enthusiasm from the crowd. Seriously, I felt like I had somehow gotten trapped in the filming of Magic Mike. But the energy that came from that segment of the show definitely set the pace for the rest of the night as everyone seemed to begin to enjoy the event and immerse themselves in all things fashion and art.

Overall, the evening was nothing short of anything I would expect from an LA fashion show. There was complete appreciation for a variety of styles, and all the attendees took the opportunity to express what style means to them. My only concern for LA is, fellow Angelenos for being the most excentric of the fashion lovers crowd we really need to embrace more color! So much black and white you would have thought we were attending a runway event hosted by Coco Chanel herself. I guess when it comes down to it despite all the rough edges we are quite a classy crowd ourselves.

My favorite art piece at the show!

The day is almost here! LA Fashion Week Project Ethos Event is tomorrow!

The day is almost here! LA Fashion Week Project Ethos Event is tomorrow!

This picture really does not do this dress justice. The possibilities to accessorize this dress are endless.

Well I am officially in my favorite predicament. I have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. I love my designers but I also love my signature pieces. I have worn the heck out of my favorite Zac Posen for Target red ruffled dress. So alas, I’m contemplating debuting some of my closet favorites that have yet to see the light of day.

For LA Fashion, pretty much anything goes, and that’s my problem! Too many options, too much freedom and my fashion senses just continue to run a muck. I’ve been racking my brain for weeks now and this is what I’ve come up with.

Do I go fancy? If that is the route I go, my choice is my romantic lace turqoise halter cocktail dress. I’d have to wear my hair up to show the stunning detail in the back and I have TO DIE for blue crystal jewelry that would be the perfect accent. Not to mention I’d be able to strut my favorite sparkly Chanel heels on the red carpet.

Or do I go the fun whimsical route and wear my Free People hot pink endless lace dress. The model on Free People’s web site sports this with an uber awesome large brimmed hat, and that would answer my current root problem. Not to mention, pink is my signature color and my rhinestone incrusted hot pink Manolo Blahnik’s would be a match made in heaven. LA Fashion is all about expressing who you are through fashion. This outfit screams Barbie and have I ever mentioned that’s my nick name? This would definitely be my signature look.

My final option would be to go uber chic with an Alexander Wang goddess type jersey and silk dress. This dress reminds me of a blank canvas. It’s so elegant but the possibilities to accessorize the dress are amazing. I love how this blogger accessorizes hers with large chunky jewelry. The shoes of choice for this dress would be my Sergio Rossi cut out ankle booties.

Gah! Decisions decisions! Whelp friends and fellow fashionistas, help a gal out and help me pick an outfit! The choice will be announced on Wednesday when I recap all the exciting fashions I experienced at the Project Ethos Event.

LA Fashion Week IS ALMOST HERE!

So after watching New York, London and Paris fashionistas do their thang at their respective fashion weeks, finally fellow Los Angeles fashion lovers our time is almost here! So, ok we are not going to have Chanel, Burberry or even Marc Jacobs participate but in the spirit of LA fashion, that is just fine.

LA Fashion Week is more about celebrating the styles that  make LA Fashion whimsical, sassy, genuine and unique. Don’t get me wrong, in LA we love our labels but we also love using fashion as means of expressing ourselves and our individual spirit as well.

I couldn’t be more thrilled to actually get to enjoy a show this year! (In past years I’ve volunteered behind the scenes at the Vibiana.) This year I’ll be attending the Project Ethos event, which is a runway, art exhibit and runway all in one.

Picture 7

So naturally I’m doing my research and seeing who is all participating. In doing research I’ve stumbled upon an AMAZING shoe collection that reminds me of an eco friendly version of Jeffrey Campbell. The collection is by an up and coming 22 year-old, Los Angeles based designer Deandri. The label, which includes clothing, shoes and jewelry takes classic fashion favorites and has added a unique twist to it. Case in point, check out their clear oxford. OMG! Can I get 3?! This label definitely captures the spirit of Angeleno’s tendancies to embrace classics and re-imagine them with spirit.
