Flower Crown: By Just Jess (aka Me)
Dress: H &M
Sandals: Elizabeth and James
So after realizing my favorite accessory for the coming season is a flower crown/ headband, I decided the best thing for myself and my bank account is to learn how to make the item myself. I’ve always had a knack for arts and crafts, and when I found this step by step Youtube tutorial, I practically skipped to the closest Michael’s to get my supplies.
The procedure is simple. Gather your favorite flowers from your neighborhood craft store (as of this blog post Michael’s is running a 40% off sale. Yup, you’re welcome!) Snip your favorite petals, or in my case I pulled, and glue the flower to a piece of elastic. While I LOVE the end result, and some critique from the BF I’ve decided my next attempt at this will involve some twine and maybe even some leather, for a more au natural look.
Stay tune to see how the rest of the collection turned out! I might even start putting some up on my Etsy account.

Put em all together and you’ve got Malibu Barbie!
Confession time…Halloween is my favorite holiday. For someone who works retail, it’s one of the few holidays I can actually take off and celebrate in peace. To those brave souls who work in the Halloween stores, I applaud you and thank you for your service. Don’t get me wrong, while I love the foofiness of a store bought costume, I thoroughly enjoy calling upon my inner Martha Stuart to see what I can come up with. While it is my lifelong dream to dress up one day as Britney Spears from her MTV VMA “Slave For You Performance.” My abs need more definition before I can make that happen.
Alas, this year I opted for Barbie. She’s my fashion icon and she seemed more fun than Coco Chanel. The best part of being me and dressing up as Barbie? I really didn’t have to do much to prepare other then invest in a black and white striped leotard from Forever 21 achieve the “Classic Barbie” look. That look was for last weekends parties. And for yesterday, out of fear for being not just an “outfit repeater” but even worst a “BARBIE OUTFIT REPEATER” (the horror and I shudder at the thought) I opted for this baby blue number and went out as Malibu Barbie. I had a few people tell me I didn’t nail it. I was polite and explained I knew where I strayed from the original, but I really wanted to tell them “Hunny I’ve been a Barbie fan since as long as I can remember. My bumper sticker says ‘Backstreet Barbie.’ I know Barbie.”
There are so many great things about dressing up as Barbie! My makeup gets to be sparkly and pink! There is no such thing to wearing too much sparkle. And I finally have an excuse to wear my hot pink Alice and Olivia Rain Coat. This years costume was sooo much fun! People actually came up to me and shook my hand because of how brilliant my outfit was. Some people thought I had dressed up as Gaga, another thought I had dressed up as Elle Woods from “Legally Blonde.” My response to that is I object! But I do love her too.
My Barbie Jacket aka a Raincoat by Alice and Olivia.
Of course the jewelry for the night came from my favorite accessory designer Tarina Tarantino.
All this talk of Beach Barbie even inspired an ocean themed for my pumpkin. Ordinary is not in my vocabulary but thingamabob and dinglehopper are. FYI I did this completely free hand. I wouldn’t even know where to get a stencil, but I did get the idea for the silhouette from Pintrest.
All I know is I can’t wait till next year! And who knows, maybe I’ll do this Barbie thing every year. Lord knows there are more than enough outfit choices, and hopefully next year I’ll have a hot pink corvette or at least a Barbie dream house to match.

Even my boyfriend got into the act and went as Surfer Ken. He’s kind of a dream boat.
Pumpkin Spice lattes aren’t the only thing I have to look forward to this Fall! Wildfox just announced their inspiration behind the coming season’s must have collection! Inspired by the “Great Gatsby” phenomenon comes “Daisy’s Girls.”
I want one now!
Head designer Kimberley Gordon released a statement behind the inspiration for the collection via the Wildfox Facebook page, “It’s amazing how we are approaching the 20’s again, but for our generation! I was really inspired by this decade for the first time in my life. Generally, I’d found the subject a bit dull, but after re-reading The Great Gatsby I realized it really felt so Wildfox! Parties all the time, driving into town, spending money, falling in love, big mansions and gardens, the ocean, brewing your own alcohol, best friends and broken hearts…it’s just so amazingly fun. It was all sparkle, true love, dancing, and champagne!”
I think I was a flapper in another life.
I’m curious as to what other color options will be available in this…
And I have to give Wildfox two major thumbs up for another spot on campaign! Kudos to the designers and creative directors on this project for making me want to immediately place an order for a prohibition sweater, pop on the Gatsby soundtrack (skip quickly to Beyonce and Andre 3000’s eery rendition of “Back to Black”) and start reading the American classic.
A cozy top paired with glam? Why hello there genius ensemble!
Cheers Wildfox. You’ve done it again.
