When I Grow Up I Wanna Be Bad Ass Like Betsey

So naturally you could watch a Betsey Johnson runway show and go all sorts of Joan Rivers. Floral print? How much more cliché can you get for a Spring collection? Body suits, cropped tops (what I learned from that is Betsey is trying to tell me to get my butt in the gym because next season I’m gonna need a crop top.) But if you’re going to sit and watch a Betsey Johnson runway show and critique, you don’t get Betsey Johnson at all.

Betsey doesn’t make pieces to win awards, or going down in history a la’ the same route as McQueen or Dolce and Gabanna. She’s fashion in her own right. Crazy, loud, bold and beautiful. And I LOVE it all! With the exception of the all leopard pieces that remind me too much of Peggy Bundy. While granted Betsey has gone through some, ahem…modifications in her business structure recently she could start from scratch and re-do her formula, but she’s not. Despite it all she’s sticking to what she knows, and that’s staying true to her art form and essentially herself. Her crazy cartwheeling splits performing fabulous self. And the fact that she has her grand daughters joining in on the fun? Betsey Johnson isn’t just a designer, she’s a legend and a hero in my opinion in the fashion world. Not many people can say forget tradition I’m making my own, and do it for as long as she has. Betsey, on behalf of the pink souled sparkle loving girly girls of the world, thank you for always inspiring.

New York Fashion Week 2013

Whelp, New York Fashion Week has come to a conclusion and now it is time for the fashion power houses to strut their stuff in London.

And what did we learn from New York Fashion Week? Well for starters, it appears as though once the leaves start falling from the trees we are going to see tons of navy, lots of leather, and fur trimmed outerwear. Also, to remind us of the season immediately following, lots of winter white. And who says you can’t wear white after Labor Day?

Some of my favorite runway presentations were the following:

BCBG MaxAzria had a beautiful show case. From bold prints to sheer overlays, everything about this collection was true to the brand, and also brought something memorable to the runway. Again, sheer, floor length top anyone? I know Christmas is almost a year away but I will most certainly be asking Santa Clause for some of BCBG’s leg warmers.

So pretty! So fun! So couture! My favorite runway piece from New York Fashion Week Fall 2013. Stunning piece by BCBG

Marc Jacobs had a stunning presentation, as always. One of things I love most about Marc Jacobs is he never deviates from his own style. Bold prints, and unique use of color blocking are as signature to Jacobs as cherry red souls to Christian Louboutin. My favorite runway debuts were his cherry and crimson red color blocked mod dresses.

My most favorite presentation for this season though was the collection by Rachel Zoe. Quite literally I believe my jaw dropped with every piece that walked down the runway. I loved several things about her collection. The first being her use of taupe, and white. There is something about taupe leather that makes my heart go a flutter. Unlike other designers who are typically known for creating very feminine pieces and deviated slightly from that for this seasons collection, Zoe discovered a perfect way to incorporate the dreariness and very structured trend that usually radiates from fall collections and made it girly. For example, an a line skirt with pleats, structured yet feminine, and a solution to the girly girl’s overly structured problem. Loved her sequined sweaters, and fur trimmed plaid outerwear pieces. Long story short, I just loved everything about this presentation.

This sequined cardi was one of my favorite pieces by Rachel Zoe to waltz down the runway.

The runway that broke my heart with disappointment was Betsey Johnson. Seriously, I’m sighing as I’m typing this. Don’t get me wrong, I love Betsey. I love that a woman of that mentality, who adores pink and sparkles as much as I do is a runway veteran and still does cartwheels on the cat walk. But work out wear? Really? The collection looked uninspired and prepared last minute. Bring back the pretty dresses! I have no doubt, next time will be better because really, it could not possibly get any worse.

While I don't love the Betsey Johnson workout apparel, I could see myself loving her work out accessories.

Usually when Fall officially arrives, I embrace it lovingly because that means Starbucks is once again serving Pumpkin Spice lattes and I can once again wear large cozy sweaters and cute scarves. But alas, that is what I’ve been wearing for the past 3 months and I am ready for Summer. But I’m glad I know what to shop for post Labor Day.

Coincidence that a show documenting the life and style of Carrie Bradshaw during her teenage years in the 80’s premieres just as contemporary favorites Wildfox debuts their collection inspired by 90’s cult classic Clueless? Ya, I thought not either.

Yup, I'm totally buggin' over the inspiration for Wildfox's spring/ summer collection

If these two facts are any indication, spring and summer 2013 are bringing fun, and flouncy pieces utilizing the best and brightest colors of the rainbow.

If you are an 80’s baby like myself, and a fashionista whose dreamed of Carrie’s wardrobe sine the first glance of a Manolo Blahnik, you watched last night’s premier of “The Carrie Diaries” completely envious that I only got to enjoy 4 years of the eighties. Although it must be noted even as a toddler I still rocked neon and polka dots, and scrunchies and bangles were my favorite accessory.

Well neon and frills lovers, our time has come yet once again! And this season you can find the essentials to complete this look everywhere from Forever 21 to investing in timeless pieces from our favorite designers who were born to design for seasons like this, Betsey Johnson and Patricia Fields to name a few.

Just a few friendly tips to add that extra wow factor would be to add some tulle or a petticoat to make even the most basic Forever 21 dress look like an essential wardrobe Carrie piece.

This polka dot peplum dress available at Forever 21 for just $15.80 would look just fab with some big, chunky colorful jewelry!

Jazz up and personalize any outfit by bedazzling or painting any accessory to make it truly one of a kind (did anyone else’s mind explode when Carrie made her own signature Carrie bag last night?) And what better way to show that you are having fun with your outfit then to layer the accessories! The bigger, brighter and bolder the better!

A wise woman once said, “I like my money where I can see it, hanging in my closet.” So when my boyfriend asks where all my money went right before the summer season, I’m quite simply going to tell him, “I invested it.”

Tis the season for bows, bows and more bows!

Bow top by Free Generation and patent leather bow flats by Miu Miu

We are officially less then a month away from Christmas and what better way to celebrate the holidays then by decorating yourself with bows! Truth be told, I’d love to give credit for this obsession entirely to the holidays but if you know me, you know that I live up to my self proclaimed title of an all around girly girl. Thus you can pretty much find me wearing bows any time of the year. It just so happens that this time of year I wear these closet favorites just a little more often then other signature pieces of mine.

I’m hoping that my Miu Miu flats were made of magic leather and will last forever. And my Free Generation black satin bow top has been a holiday attire favorite for the past 2 years. What does that tell me? Bows are classic! These days you can find them perfectly and eloquently placed on everything from tights, bags, blouses, dresses, shoes, hair accessories, cell phones…well pretty much everything!

Tarina Tarantino grosgrain ribbon bow available at Tarina Tarantino

My biggest weakness seems to be bows in the form of sparkly jewelry. You know you have a problem when you walk into a Tarina Tarantino boutique and the whole team knows your name. Or even worst when your favorite boutique hunts you down to let you know that they got a new shipment of pieces you don’t have! Needless to say Tarina and Betsey Johnson are my go to gals when looking to get a fix of sparkle and all around fabulousness, and this season they have to die for designs that are influenced by, you guessed it BOWS!
