“Grunge Was The Worse Part of My Life”

So I was watching a documentary the other day on the editors of Vogue. And while they all had intriguing things to say about ground breaking editorials of the past century, one the things that stood out most was one editor (forgive me I forgot her name, but it wasn’t Anna Wintour) and her loathing of the grunge phase. So much effort was spent on establishing this phase in fashion history, even for some to look back and say that it was the worse period of their lives!

Then I started thinking. Is that ever going to be me? I am hardly a prestigious writer. I have never been published in Vogue (yet.) But is that part of the initiation rights of being a well renowned writer? Giving up what you believe in? It would seem so. For me part of this journey of becoming a blogger was inspired by my short lived internship as a Fashion Editor for Orangecounty.com. They were Roxy and surf and I gave up that life in 9th grade. (Partly because I’ve never surfed in my life and I was called out as a poser. Oh the vocabulary of my generation <insert giggles here>) It wasn’t me. My editor knew it, I knew it thus I gave myself my own platform. Where I would never be subjected to force out an article or force inspiration. Am I going to look back on these posts one day and think to myself “God, what was I thinking?” God I hope not. Truth be told, the only fashion phase I’ve ever gone through and regretted were more so of the beauty kind than the fashion kind. Blue eye shadow works on some, for me I end up looking like Mimi from Drew Carry. I wish someone would have told me this when I went down that road in high school. Alas, Britney wore it so I had to try it. She wins the “who wore it best look” on that one.

While these days my style is much more toned down in comparison to previous years I still feel like I’m coming in to my own. And I don’t regret the decisions that will ultimately determine the direction of my next fashion phase, even if it means trying out the all pink on pink look. I do still own my hot pink bubblegum pants! Either way since I’ve come into this whole concept of doing things on my own terms in my own way, I highly doubt I’ll be that person that looks back and says “that worse time of my life.” Nobody has forced me to do anything. My mistakes and triumphs are my own and like with everything else I prefer it that way.

Rock That Fashion Runway Show

Rock That Fashion Runway Show

Dress: Alexander Wang Shoes: Sergio Rossi

So after this week, I’m addicted to runway shows. And yesterday I discovered two things. First and most importantly I broke the cardinal rule for being a photographer. MAKE SURE YOU CHARGE YOUR BATTERY BEFOOOORE AN EVENT! Lesson learned, and thank you to the kind (insert sarcasm here) words of advice to carry around an extra battery pack. Also, I discovered a new found love for haute couture.

So I was pretty bummed when I found out I missed the official Style Week LA runway show on Thursday. LA is about an hour or so drive away from me (with traffic so it’s not really that bad.) But for gas purposes I had to choose my shows wisely. Thus my finale was Runway Magazines, “Rock That Fashion” post Style Week party.

Granted the press release had stated there would be a slew of celebrities there, but the only stars I saw were on the runway in the form of haute couture and bedazzled swim suits. It was love at first sparkle. The runway featured everything I could have ever hoped to witness on a catwalk. Drama, sparkle, fluff, a Madonna impersonation annd a tribute to legends of fashion including McQueen. If I had a drink in hand I would have raised a glass to the late and great designer.

Ugh, so incredibly annoyed my camera only lasted 3 shows in. But the memories will last a life time. Such an incredible end to such a fun week! I found it incredibly fitting that almost everywhere I went last night Britney’s new song “Work Bitch” was playing. She’s right if you want something in life, ya gotta work bitch.

What trends did I spot during this season?

In LA, anything really goes (except to the lady who showed up in a poncho. Just, no.) All the bandage dresses were boring. I loved the girls taking risks! Black is always chic and classic. I loved all the pleated leather skirts! To the girl wearing the fuschia bedazzled Jimmy Choos, you win the best shoe award. Surprisingly I LOVE LOVE LOVE the hipsters chic use of denim. And braids are perhaps the hottest trend in hairstyles.

Until next season Style Week!

It’s Work Britney, Bitch.

So when I woke up this morning I had no idea it was Britney Sunday until I checked Facebook and saw my news feed flooded with the wonderful news! Yup, our queen has released a single! And as I type this my boyfriend is moving and grooving to this catchy tune.

The thing with Britney is ya either love her or hate her. Or you hate her for a while and then once she releases a smash you jump back on the band wagon. The thing with Britney though, is at the end of the day, she really is Britney, Bitch. Yes we get it. Beyonce is Queen B, and is an uber diva, but at the end of the day that’s what she is, a diva! And from one self-proclaimed diva to another, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

However, one of the things I love about Britney is that at the end of the day she’s just a normal girl like the rest of us. How many times have we seen her daddy making her cheese grits? How many times have we seen her sipping on Starbucks? How many times have we seen the girl wear Uggs? Some people might look down upon her for such things. I mean gasp! The thought of wearing Uggs! As a person who works in retail and see’s those things fly off the shelves and the proud owner of at least 3 pairs, half the female population in Southern California if not the globe is guilty of such a crime. In my opinion it’s not really a crime until you start breaking in to the realm of the Swap Meet knock off ones’ that you should really be ashamed. Seriously it’s called outlet shopping people! The suede lasts soooo much longer and really it’s only a $50 difference, if that.

Britney even makes running errands look glamorous.

Britney even makes running errands look glamorous.

In any event, Britney is a fashion icon in her own right. She’s an everyday girls fashion icon because yes even she has been known for wearing Abercrombie and Pink. She is proof that you don’t have to spend a million dollars to look like a million dollars. She’s just lucky enough to get paid to play dress up too! And who can argue that when girlfriend cleans up she cleans up beautifully!

I find it incredibly humorous that just a few years ago the whole world seemed to be ragging on Britney’s case about how she presented herself. However, now that they have another Southern darling to criticize, all of a sudden Britney has become the one to play the sexy/ beautiful role naturally?

Photo shopped, air brushed stylist team, I don't care at the end of the day Britney is beautiful.

At the end of the day, Britney is always going to be Britney and her true fans are going to love her whether she goes toxic, and does it all again. At the end of the day it’s her prerogative and bottom line she was born to make us happy and we’re always going to ask her to give us more. Every time.
