So as always Style Fashion Week LA was a blast! It’s probably my favorite week of the year! Not only is it a chance to see some of my favorites but I love getting introduced to new designers as well! There are no words adequate enough to describe how exciting it is seeing names I’ve seen on the runway hit the racks in my store. XCVI and Hale Bob are two that I’ve seen recently and I was beyond thrilled to be seeing one of them again on the runway this season. More on that though in my next post.

Signature Young kicked off the shows on Thursday night, with a performance and the march of a flag. Designed by Curtis Young, this urban chic ready to wear collection literally had me thinking “I am sooo ready to wear that!” Literally, I need to figure out where I can get the grey sweater shown above like yesterday.

Control Sector, a New York city based retailer was second to sashay down the catwalk. Immediately I was reminded of the casual cool apparel you find on the sophisticated skater/ surfer crowd you typically find hanging out in Long Beach or Huntington. Truthfully the words that came to mind when I saw Joe Simpson (yes, Jessica and Ashlee’s dad) walk down the runway smoking an e-cigarette was “lords of dog town.” This company, which describes it’s designs as a “blend of sophisticated street wear and modern mens wear that aims to defy convention, yet remain wearable” has been on the rise since it was founded in 2013. The LA market is just the next round of domination as the label just appeared in both New York and Fashion Week Middle East.

I Am Zoe, a collection of beautiful feminine pieces immediately reminded me of couture labels Chloe and Stella Mcartney and were some of my favorite designs to walk down the runway Thursday night! From the structure, to the colors and cut out outs it was absolutely perfect! Designed by Otilia Mendez, the collection was a refreshing breath of fresh air in comparison to the sportier pieces that previously showcased on the runway that evening. These kinds of collections were more my style. Do some of these pieces look familiar to you? They did to me too actually, and that’s because I Am Zoe also showcased at Fashion Week San Diego. I look forward to seeing many more of Mendez’s beautiful designs on a runway very soon! In the mean time I need to know where I need to go to invest in one of these pieces!

Kaye Morales introduced Angelinos to her “Centipede Collection.” I wasn’t planning on unofficially awarding oddest yet hottest collection to any particular designer but she inspired the unofficial Just Jess Fashion Award. It was as if Lady Gaga met Britney back when she did her Oops I Did It Again performance at the MTV VMA’s back in 2000. This is not a bad thing for those of us who appreciate a sheer jump suit embellished with shiny and odd things. A designer who is known for her “style that intertwines opposing designs with utmost taste-urban street wear with class, punk with sophistication and elegance with a wild streak” has been on the rise since 2009. She’s not only wowing audiences at runway shows but also received the prestigious honor of receiving a designer profile in Vogue. I have no doubt we are going to see big things from Morales in the seasons to come.

A Atiz a collection of very feminine and romantic prints and colors was also one of my favorites of the evening. As odd as this may sound it reminded me of Alice and Olivia meets a H&M garden collection. Designed by Swati Padmaraj, the collections are inspired by both Eastern traditions mixed with Western innovations. Beautiful, expressive and sexy are the key words that come to mind when watching her designs float down the runway. Her pieces can actually be purchased from her website and are reasonably priced! Pieces start at $59. Way better than the triple digit price point you would pay for an Alice and Olivia piece and well worth the extra penny for better construction as opposed to a similar H&M piece.

Aside from having a super cute name, Judith and James was the token So. Cal collection of the night. Reminding me of other So. Cal boutique favorites like Gypsy and Young Fabulous and Broke,  Judith and James nailed the Cali cool look. Anna Taylor’s inspiration for the label is actually much more enriching than being inspired by what’s currently in trend. Judith and Jame’s was inspired by Taylor’s experience working with the impoverished women and children of Nairobi, Kenya. It is her vision to use her creative talent to help those women in poverty. Anna is a rising star in the fashion world after first being introduced during New York Fashion Week in September 2013. I love discovering designers who create from the heart and work only to promote a better world through fashion, and I can’t wait to see what good things are next for this designer.

Concluding Thursday’s runway show was Donna Mizani. Although originally from New York and now based out of LA, this woman is known for her amazing cutout dresses! Not surprising at all considering we all know us LA girls love our cut out dresses. And truthfully readers the sexy modern silhouettes of these designs are what brought me to cheer loud at the conclusion of the show. Even better, I feel as though Mizani has captured a classic signature style for LA. What does that mean exactly? It means that you can invest in one of these pieces and can have it last for countless seasons without being concerned its’ going out of style. Even better, some of the pieces that made my jaw drop on the runway are now available to purchase at her website.
